Stephanie Ayres Consulting Limited (SACL) is a public affairs, government relations and communications consultancy specialising in advising clients in highly regulated sectors and those for whom the Government is a major customer. Our campaigns are designed to maximise the opportunity for success based, as they are, on the realities of the competitive environment.

Drawing on 20 years experience of competitive bid management and campaigning we can demonstrate an excellent track record in securing highly political contracts for our clients. By understanding the prevailing pressures on the relevant decision makers clients are able to direct their business development resources efficiently and effectively.

Our clients are typically business development, communications, PR or public affairs executives who need to position their company or organisation in the best place either to win new business or to protect a current position.

Stephanie Ayres began her career in the UK House of Commons where she worked for two senior Labour MPs and for the central party during the 1997 General Election Campaign. After four years working within the political system she moved to one of the UK's most successful government relations consultancies where she used her experience to advise clients in a number of highly regulated sectors including the defence and aerospace sector, privatisation and utility regulation and government procurement.

Government procurement has always been highly political because of the size of the contracts, their sensitivity and their importance to both national security and the economy. Stephanie ran very successful practices at GJW Government Relations and APCO UK during her time as a consultant and helped her clients to secure extremely high value projects, often in excess of a billion pounds. She has advised many of the largest defence and aerospace companies on a variety of issues and specialises in business development, campaign management and government relations.

Stephanie was involved in the extremely political utility privatisations of the late '90s. During this time she worked with a large number of newly privatised companies and helped them to work with the Government to establish effective regulatory regimes. During this period she helped the various players develop their sensitivity to the challenges faced by those they might feel were naturally hostile to their position. This experience stood her in good stead for her future work in the area of Government procurement.

Before setting up her own consultancy in 2007 Stephanie spent five years as the Executive Director of Corporate Affairs and Communications for Raytheon in the UK. Combined with her consultancy experience this gave her a good understanding of the pressures faced not only by a large global company but also by those responsible for managing reputation in a sensitive sector at a difficult time.

  • Business development
Successful business development depends on converting contacts to contracts. SACL specialises in helping teams to maximise their skills in networking, negotiating and understanding what is driving their customers' decision making.

  • Campaign planning and implementation
Government procurement is a highly competitive environment. Having the right team and the right approach is crucial. A long track record of successful competitive bids has given SACL an insight into what works and what does not.

  • Internal communications
Often an organisation's customers are its own workforce. How information is communicated internally is critically important to the success of change management as well as day to day efficiency. A disgruntled workforce is easy to achieve and difficult to manage so effective internal communications are essential.

  • Government relations
Whether your customer is central or local government or they regulate the sector in which you operate, it is important to forge strong contacts across the board. By understanding the driving factors behind decision making you are far more likely to establish good relations and pitch your proposals clearly and effectively.

  • Training and individual coaching
In-house teams can benefit from external coaching either where there are performance issues or where staff are ready to take the next step. Stephanie Ayres is a CIPD trained coach and can help unlock the potential of existing communications , business development and public affairs teams.
